DB 4.0/10 Jun 17, 2026

Serverless Redis-compatible data store for hot state, queues, sessions, rate limits, and lightweight automation registries.

Card required
No

Upstash | Redis scores 4/10 for free value in DB. The main constraint: Free tier: 10 databases, 256 MB data size, 10 GB monthly bandwidth, and 500K monthly commands.

Note: no FPS in parallel report — used audit recommendation
Category DB Kind Serverless Redis Caveats This is hot key-value state, not a document workspace or primary long-form knowledge store. Once upgraded to pay-as-you-go, the free Redis allowance no longer remains free inside that paid database. Renewal monthly Card required No Eligibility anyone

Serverless scale-to-zero style operational model

Gotchas

  • 10 free databases

The free tier allows up to 10 Redis databases; additional databases beyond 10 cost $0.5 per database.

  • 500K commands/month

Monthly command quota resets each calendar month; exceeding it rate-limits the database.

  • 10 GB bandwidth/month

Monthly outbound bandwidth is capped at 10 GB; exceeding it blocks traffic until the next cycle.

  • 256 MB data size

Maximum persistent data stored in the database is capped at 256 MB; writes are blocked when full.

  • 10,000 ops/sec ceiling

Throughput is capped at 10,000 commands per second, the same ceiling shared with paid fixed plans up to Fixed 50GB.

  • No Multi-Zone HA or SLA

Free tier lacks Multi-Zone High Availability, Uptime SLA, encryption at rest, Prometheus/Datadog monitoring, and SOC-2 report — all gated behind the paid Prod Pack add-on.

  • No global replication

Read regions (global replication) are only available on paid Fixed and Enterprise plans.

  • 10 MB max request size

Individual Redis command payloads are capped at 10 MB; larger payloads are rejected with an exception.

  • Card upgrade ends free tier

Adding a credit card automatically upgrades the database to pay-as-you-go and removes the free-tier allowance; there is no way to add a card while staying on the free plan.

  • Shared serverless infrastructure

Free databases run on shared serverless infrastructure with no dedicated resources or isolation guarantees.
